Green Park

Green Park is one of the Royal Parks of London and is in the heart of one of the greenest locations in the West End of London. It has a rather interesting history as it was once a lepers’ burial ground and mostly consisted of swamp land. In the 17th century, the Poulteny family, who owned the land, handed it over to King Charles II, who promptly built a brick wall around it, stocked it with deer, built an icehouse to cook his drinks while he enjoyed the space and named it Upper St. James’s Park. By the mid-18th century, it was commonly referred to as The Green Park.

At that period in history, the area was rather sketchy, lying on what was considered the outskirts of London. Robberies by highwaymen were not uncommon there and it was also used as a field where duels were held, often between noblemen. It is the smallest central London Royal Park and is primarily landscaped with trees and narcissus. The Tyburn Stream flowed beneath the park and provided water for what was known as The Queen’s Basin, which provided water to St. James’s Palace. Caroline, Queen Consort to King George II, built a library and boulevard in the park, known as Queen’s Walk, which was the fashionable place for the wealthy to promenade at the time.

By 1826, the park was considerably smaller, having has part of the land co-opted for royal gardens at Buckingham House and the development of mansions on the east side of the Queen’s Walk. It was opened to the public, the reservoir was filled in and the library was eventually demolished.

Green Park Tube Station can be found at the northern corner of Green Park along Piccadilly. It was originally called Dover Street Station, when it opened in 1906 as that is the street where it is located. In the 1930’s it was modernised and new buildings and entrances were created to accommodate a new ticket hall and escalators. The original building was closed and eventually demolished.
